Pemberton is the unexpected jewel of the Coast Mountains. The community is just a 25-minute drive north of Whistler and serves as a gateway to adventure.
Located at the foot of majestic Mount Currie, Pemberton’s back yard includes vast tracts of backcountry. As a result, Pemberton is a recreational paradise and hosts a variety of wilderness-inspired activities.
Pemberton is one of B.C.’s oldest communities and has maintained a friendly atmosphere and rural flavor. Since the early 1900’s, visitors and residents have been falling in love with the Village of Pemberton.
Between 2001 and 2006, Pemberton was the fastest growing municipality in British Columbia. According to the 2006 Statistics Canada census, the town grew by 33.5 per cent. Pemberton’s population spiked from 1,642 to 2,192 in five years.
Pemberton is also a growing hub for organic produce with farmers growing a variety of vegetables and berries. Much of the produce is in high demand among fine-dining restaurants based in Vancouver.
Today, expansion continues in all sectors – housing, commercial and industrial. Pemberton has some of the best recreational activities that B.C. has to offer, and is a spectacular setting. Designated a “Gateway Community” to the backcountry, Pemberton is also recognized as a Superhost Community.
The year 2008 marks the 150th year since the founding of British Columbia as a Crown Colony. This is particularly significant to the Pemberton area as the Harrison-Lillooet trail was the first major route to the interior and through the lands that had been occupied by the First Nations people for thousands of years. This was the first wave of white settlers to the area. Port Pemberton was the terminus at the head of Lillooet Lake and the valley has adopted this name. The construction of this trail was one of the first acts of Governor Douglas and this places this area in a unique position because we are part of the province’s early history.
The beautiful Pemberton Valley, nestled among the magnificent Coast Mountains , and famous for its virus free seed potato industry, also hosts a wide variety of recreation activities including snowmobiling, cycling, horseback riding, skiing, golfing, hiking, rafting, jet boating, ,fishing , gliding, parasailing, and camping. Pemberton is named after Joseph Despard Pemberton, a surveyor general for the Hudson’s Bay Co. in the 1850’s. The original Pemberton Hotel still operates today, and the Pemberton Museum consists of a number of original log homes all of which add to the heritage and rustic charm of the area. First settled via the waterway ( at Lillooet Lake), Pemberton entered the age of the railway in 1914 when the first passenger train rolled through bringing with it more families to settle in the valley.
Pemberton is a hub of family farms, with many farms being operated by third and fourth generation farmers. It is unofficially a GE free zone. Its food-producing base makes it a rare asset in BC where less than 3% of the land is prioritized as agricultural. The Pemberton Valley is still underutilized in it's agricultural potential, but produces 60% of the province's potato crop. There is almost 20,000 hectares of farmland in the region, growing primarily seed potato, forage crops and beef cattle. However, there is a growing number of organic and market garden operations.
Local produce includes Pemberton Meadows Natural Beef, blueberries, organic garlic, organic and conventionally grown potatoes, organic greens, hazelnuts, honey, locally-roasted coffee beans, root vegetables, strawberries, raspberries...
An estimated 95% of the seed potatoes grown in the Valley are exported, predominantly to California. However, local table potatoes are now being served at the Pony, Wildwood, Legion and Mt Currie Coffee Co. Pemberton produce also finds its way to the finest tables in the Sea to Sky and Lower Mainland, through Farmers Market sales, local grocers, and Vancouver and Whistler chefs with a passion for sourcing quality locally grown produce, like Diva at the Met, West, Araxi, the Westin, Ciao Thyme Bistro, Après, Bearfoot Bistro, Rimrock Cafe, Whistler Cooks Catering, Edgewater Lodge, Mt Currie Coffee Company, Pemberton Legion, Pony Espresso, Wildwood Café.
The Pemberton Festival Site is located in a grassed area at the foot of the majestic 8300 foot Mount Currie in picturesque Pemberton, BC. Pemberton is a recreational paradise, serving as a gateway to adventure, hosting a variety of wilderness-inspired activities.
The Pemberton Festival is committed to producing a sustainable event with the intent of reducing its overall environmental impact. We are dedicated to seeking innovative opportunities to create the most environmentally friendly event possible.
